Claude, Anthropic’s AI assistant, has a reputation for being excellent at writing, analyzing documents and thinking things through. But do you have to pay to get the most out of it? No: Claude has a free plan that does a lot more than most people expect. Web search, projects, artifacts, memory, voice mode, creating Word, Excel or PowerPoint files: all of it is available without a subscription.
In this guide, I break down what you can really do with Claude for free in 2026, the limits you should know about, the file types it accepts, privacy, and when the Pro plan starts to make sense. If you’re new to the tool, start with my complete guide to Claude AI.

How to use Claude for free
All you need is an account:
- Go to claude.ai or download the Claude app (Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android).
- Sign up with an email address or a Google account.
- Start chatting.
No credit card is required for the free plan. One heads-up: under Anthropic’s terms of use, Claude.ai is only for people 18 and older. So unlike some other assistants, it’s not a tool to hand to a teenager.
Which model does free Claude use?
As of September 29, 2026, Claude Sonnet 5.5, which Anthropic launched the day before, is available to everyone on Claude.ai, including without a subscription. The model you get may still change as Anthropic rolls out updates. Claude Fable 5.1 remains limited to the Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, and subscribers get the model picker.
In my experience, the free model handles writing, summaries, explanations and everyday document analysis really well.
What you can do for free
Chat, write and think
This is the heart of Claude, and what I think it does best: drafting text, rewording a passage, getting honest feedback on a draft, untangling a problem, preparing a decision. Claude has a natural, nuanced style that people love for long or sensitive pieces.
Here’s a draft of the letter I want to send my landlord asking for repairs: [text]. Make it clearer and firmer while keeping it polite. Also point out any information that’s missing for it to be effective.
Search the web
Web search is included in the free plan. Claude can look up current information and cite its sources. Keep in mind that every search eats into your overall usage limit. For in-depth, multi-step research (the Research feature), you need a paid plan.
Organize your work with projects
Since 2026, projects have been available on the free plan, up to 5 projects. A project groups your conversations, reference documents and shared instructions around one topic: a thesis, a job search, a home renovation. Pro subscribers get unlimited projects.
Create artifacts
Artifacts are pieces of content Claude creates alongside the conversation: a document, a table, a small interactive tool, a visualization. You can edit and reuse them. Artifacts are available for free; the new Claude Docs, Slides and Design templates, however, are for paid plans only.

Use memory
Claude’s memory is on by default, including on the free plan. Claude remembers useful details from your conversations and reuses them in new chats. You can review and edit what it remembers in Settings → Memory. Searching your past conversations (finding a specific old chat), on the other hand, is a paid feature: they’re two different things.
Talk to Claude
Voice mode, still in beta, is free on mobile, desktop and the web. You can have a spoken conversation with Claude, which is handy for thinking out loud on a walk or rehearsing a presentation.
Upload files
Claude accepts a wide range of files:
- documents: PDF, DOCX, TXT, RTF, ODT, HTML, EPUB;
- data: CSV, JSON, and XLSX under certain conditions;
- images: JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP.
Upload limits are generous: up to 500 MB per file, 20 files per conversation, and PDFs up to 1,000 pages. PDFs over 100 pages are analyzed as text only (no visuals), and files added to a project are capped at 30 MB each. With very large documents, remember that they use up more of your limit.
Create files
This one flies under the radar: even on the free plan, Claude can create Excel, PowerPoint, Word and PDF files, analyze data and run code. For example, you can ask it for a budget spreadsheet ready to open, or a short slide deck built from your notes.
Using these meeting notes, create a 6-slide PowerPoint presentation: title, background, three proposals, decision to make. Keep the style clean and simple.
Five ways I find free Claude especially useful
Proofread and improve an important piece of writing
Cover letter, speech, tricky email, LinkedIn post: ask Claude for blunt feedback before any rewrite. It will tell you what isn’t working, without sugarcoating, and suggest concrete fixes.
Read this text like a demanding editor: what works, what doesn’t, and the three most important changes to make. Don’t rewrite it yet.
Understand a long document
Contract, rules, report, user manual: with support for PDFs up to 1,000 pages, Claude can analyze a hefty document and answer specific questions, quoting the relevant passages. For the step-by-step method, see my guide on how to summarize a text, which works with Claude too.
Prepare a decision
Changing jobs, choosing a school, buying a car: describe your situation and ask Claude to ask you questions, then lay out the options with their pros and risks. Its nuanced tone is a great fit for this.
Create a working document
A tracking sheet, a presentation, a schedule: Claude creates the Excel, PowerPoint or Word file directly, and you download it and keep working on it.
Learn a subject
Ask it to explain a topic from scratch, with examples, then quiz you. Put everything in a project so you keep track of your progress from one session to the next.
Free Claude vs. other free assistants
Claude isn’t the only assistant with a solid free plan. Free ChatGPT offers image generation and a polished voice mode. Free Gemini plugs into the Google ecosystem. Free Claude stands out for the quality of its writing, its handling of very large documents and its ability to create Office files.
What Claude doesn’t do: generate images the way an illustration generator does. It can create charts and interactive visuals in its artifacts, but not photos or illustrations. For that, you’ll need another tool.
My advice: keep two free assistants handy. Claude for writing and analysis, another one for images and everything else. Comparing their answers on an important question is also a great way to catch mistakes.
The limits of the free plan
A limit that varies
Free Claude doesn’t have a fixed number of messages. Your limit depends on conversation length, the files you upload, the tools you use (like web search), the model and server demand. So a long conversation with a big PDF will use much more than a string of short questions.
Usage resets every 5 hours. When you hit the limit, Claude tells you what time you can pick back up.
No Research and no advanced models
In-depth Research and the most powerful models are for subscribers only. Searching your past conversation history is also a paid feature.
No priority during peak hours
Pro subscribers get priority access when traffic is high. On the free plan, you may hit limits sooner when lots of people are using Claude.
My tips to get the most out of free Claude
- One conversation per topic: long conversations use more of your limit. Start a new one for each new subject.
- Use projects for your important files: documents stay available there, so you don’t have to re-upload them every time.
- Upload only the pages you need from a long PDF whenever you can.
- Bundle your questions into a single message instead of ten short ones.
- Review the memory every now and then in Settings → Memory.
- Use Claude for what it does best: writing, analysis and thinking.
A day with free Claude
To make all this concrete, here’s how you might use free Claude over the course of a day.
In the morning, you upload the 40-page minutes of a team meeting and ask for the decisions made and the action items that concern you. At lunch, you ask it to review the cover letter you’re working on, with blunt feedback on what isn’t working. In the afternoon, inside your “Family Budget” project, you have it build an Excel sheet of the month’s expenses from your notes. In the evening, in voice mode, you think out loud about your son’s plans after high school, and Claude helps you list the questions to ask colleges.
All of this works on the free plan. The only thing you might run into is the usage limit if you process several very large documents in a row: then you’ll have to wait for the reset, a few hours later.
Privacy: what you should know
With a consumer account, your conversations may be used to improve Claude if you allow it, if they’re flagged for a safety review, or if you’ve opted into a specific program. Check your settings in the privacy section.
For a conversation you don’t want to keep, Claude offers incognito chats, available for free: they aren’t saved to your history or to memory, and they aren’t used for training. They may still be retained on the back end for up to 30 days.
As with any assistant: no passwords, no banking details, no sensitive health information.
Claude Free or Claude Pro?
| Feature | Free | Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $0 | $20/month on the web, $20/month on the US App Store |
| Usage | Base limit, resets every 5 hours | At least 5x more per session |
| Projects | Up to 5 | Unlimited |
| Research | No | Yes |
| Search past chats | No | Yes |
| Model choice | Limited | Model picker |
| Claude Code | No | Yes |
| Priority at peak times | No | Yes |
My take: start with the free plan. If you keep hitting the limit, or you need Research, more than 5 projects or Claude Code for programming, Pro becomes worth it. I cover everything in my article on Claude Pro.
