Perplexity is one of the best tools for finding information online with sources you can actually see. The free version is already very useful, but the app keeps nudging you toward the Pro subscription, and even toward the Max plan at $200 a month. So, Perplexity Free or Pro: which one should you pick?
In this comparison, I walk you through exactly what each plan includes, the limits of the free version, what Pro really adds, who Max is for, and what you need to know about partner deals. If you’re new to the tool, start with my complete guide to Perplexity AI.
Key takeaways
- Perplexity Free: virtually unlimited basic searches, 3 Pro searches a day, 1 Research query a month, limited file uploads, model picked automatically.

Perplexity Free: what’s included
The free version (called Free or Standard) is more generous than you’d think for everyday use.
Virtually unlimited basic searches
Standard search, the kind that answers in a few seconds with numbered sources, is virtually unlimited. For everyday practical questions, that’s more than enough.
3 Pro searches a day
Pro Search breaks your question down, checks more sources and gives you a more complete answer. On the free plan, you get 3 a day, according to the official breakdown published in September 2026. Save them for the questions that deserve it.
1 Research a month
The Research feature runs an in-depth investigation and produces a detailed report. On the free plan, you get just one Research query a month. Enough to try the feature, but not much more.
Limited file uploads
You can upload files and ask questions about them, but only a limited number.
No model choice
On the free plan, you don’t pick the AI model: “Best” mode automatically chooses the one that fits your question.
Perplexity Pro: what changes
Expanded access to everything
Pro greatly expands access to Pro searches, Research and files. Perplexity now describes Pro limits as weekly or monthly limits that depend on average usage, rather than one fixed number for everyone. In other words, Pro limits are calculated over weekly or monthly windows based on usage: Perplexity doesn’t promise unlimited use.
A choice of many models
This is one of Pro’s big selling points: you can choose which AI model answers. Perplexity confirms that Pro includes access to Sonar 2, GPT-5.6 Terra, Gemini 3.1 Pro, Claude Sonnet 5, Kimi K3, GLM 5.2, Grok 4.5 and Nemotron 3 Ultra, among others. So one subscription gets you models from several different companies.
Images, videos, files and apps
Pro also lets you generate images and videos, and create files and apps from your searches.
Bigger projects
In Perplexity Projects, you can add up to 50 files per project with Pro, to organize your research around a single topic.
Computer
Computer, Perplexity’s agent that can research, code and create documents across multiple steps, is available on paid plans, using a credit system.

Perplexity Max: who is it for?
Max costs $200 a month or $2,000 a year; annual billing is only available on the website. It gives you:
- the highest access to models, Research, and file and app creation;
- exclusive models, such as GPT-5.6 Sol and Claude Opus 5;
- the Comet Assistant browsing assistant and early access to new features;
- Brain, a research preview inside Computer that builds a working memory from your projects, contacts and files, currently rolling out.
Max is aimed at heavy users who need the highest limits: research professionals, creators, power users. For everyday use, Pro or even the free version is often enough.

How much does Perplexity Pro cost?
This is where I’m being careful. Perplexity’s recent official documentation describes the plans but doesn’t always restate the Pro price. The reference value Perplexity uses in its own promotions is $200 a year. Check the exact price at checkout: the final amount, including any sales tax, is shown before you confirm.
Partner deals: be careful
Perplexity regularly offers free or discounted Pro access through partners: phone carriers, banks, student programs. It can be a great deal, but take two precautions:
- read the terms: some offers ask for a credit card and turn into a paid subscription at the end of the free period, with automatic renewal;
- make sure it’s still active: for example, the 12-month Pro offer in India with the carrier Airtel ended on January 16, 2026.
Partner offers do exist: for example, Xfinity Rewards members may be eligible for a free year of Perplexity Pro, depending on their account. If you come across one, verify it on Perplexity’s website before handing over your payment details.
Free or Pro: how to choose
Stick with Free if:
- you mostly want quick answers to practical questions;
- 3 Pro searches a day are enough for you;
- you don’t need to choose the model;
- you already pay for another assistant (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini).
Upgrade to Pro if:
- you do in-depth research several times a week;
- you want to compare answers from several AI models with one subscription;
- you work on projects with lots of files;
- you want to generate images, videos or files from your research.
Consider Max if you regularly hit Pro’s limits or need its exclusive models.
The same question on Free and on Pro
To really feel the difference, let’s take a concrete question: “Which e-bike should I buy for a 10-mile daily city commute with hills, for under $1,500?”
With a basic search (Free), Perplexity answers in a few seconds with a summary and a few sources: the specs to look at (motor, battery, weight) and two or three models mentioned in recent articles. It’s a good starting point, free and unlimited.
With a Pro search, Perplexity breaks the question down: it separately looks for independent reviews, user feedback, real-world prices and what matters for hills. The answer is more complete, better organized and backed by more sources. On the free plan, you can do this 3 times a day.
With Research, Perplexity runs a genuine investigation lasting several minutes and produces a detailed report: model comparison, strengths, weaknesses, prices, buying tips. On the free plan you only get one a month; on Pro, access is expanded.
With Pro and model choice, you can also rerun the same question with a different AI model and compare the answers. It’s an excellent way to catch a mistake or something that was left out.
Bottom line: for the e-bike question, the day’s free Pro searches are enough for most people. Pro becomes worth it if you do this kind of deep research several times a week.
Trying Pro the smart way
Before committing for a full year, a few precautions:
- Start monthly if you can, to make sure you actually use the paid features.
- Track your usage for a month: how many Pro searches, Research queries, files and model switches.
- Compare with your other subscriptions: if you already pay for ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro or Google AI Pro, their deep research features may already cover your needs.
- Check the final price at checkout, including tax.
- Set a reminder before the renewal date, especially with a trial or partner offer.
Perplexity Pro or another AI subscription?
It’s a fair question, since all the major assistants now offer web search with sources and deep research. What sets Perplexity Pro apart is that it’s built around search and gives you access to models from several companies with a single subscription. If looking things up is your main use, it’s a very sensible choice. If you’re after a versatile assistant for writing, creating and organizing, a ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini subscription will often be a better fit, with free Perplexity on the side.
Three typical profiles
The everyday curious user
They ask about ten questions a day: store hours, recipes, news, paperwork. Unlimited basic search plus 3 daily Pro searches is plenty. No need to pay.
The student or researcher
They write papers, compare sources, put together summaries. One Research query a month quickly gets in the way. Pro, with expanded deep research and 50-file projects, changes how they work.
The market-watch professional
They track an industry, prep for client meetings, write briefing notes. Pro is the minimum; Max can make sense if they use Computer and Research all day long.
My tips to get the most out of the free version
- Save Pro searches for complex or important questions.
- Keep your monthly Research for a real decision: a purchase, a career move, a big project.
- Ask complete questions from the start, including the country and time frame.
- Open the sources behind the key points.
- Pair it with another free assistant to write up or rework your results: see the best free AI tools.
What Pro doesn’t change
Whatever the plan, some rules stay the same:
- Sources aren’t always high quality: a forum or a commercial site can slip into the results, on Free as on Pro. Open the sources behind the key points.
- Summaries can distort information: a number copied wrong, a nuance lost. Check the original source.
- Paywalled and private content often stays out of reach.
- Privacy: don’t put sensitive personal information in your questions, whatever the plan.
In other words, Pro gives you more power and more choice, but the fact-checking habits I cover in my guide to searching the web with ChatGPT are still essential.
FAQ
Can you use Perplexity without an account?
You can ask a few questions without signing up, but you need a free account to keep your history and use projects.
Is free Perplexity limited?
Basic searches are virtually unlimited, but Pro searches are capped at 3 a day, Research at 1 a month, and file uploads are limited.
How much does Perplexity Pro cost in the US?
The final price is shown at checkout; the reference value Perplexity uses in its promotions is $200 a year. Check the amount before you confirm.
Which models are included in Perplexity Pro?
These include Sonar 2, GPT-5.6 Terra, Gemini 3.1 Pro, Claude Sonnet 5, Kimi K3, GLM 5.2, Grok 4.5 and Nemotron 3 Ultra. GPT-5.6 Sol and Claude Opus 5 are Max-only.
Is Perplexity Max worth it?
Max can make sense if you regularly hit Pro’s limits or need its exclusive models and features.
Are free Perplexity Pro offers legit?
They exist, but check the terms: automatic renewal, credit card required, end date. Some older offers have ended.
Does Perplexity Pro work on a phone?
Yes. The subscription is tied to your account: you get it on the website, in the mobile apps and on desktop as soon as you’re signed in. If you subscribe through an app store, you manage the subscription from that store.
Can you go back to the free version?
Yes. If you cancel, you usually keep Pro features until the end of the period you paid for, then you go back to the free plan’s limits.
The bottom line
Free Perplexity is enough for everyday searching, with unlimited basic searches and 3 Pro searches a day. Pro becomes worth it if you regularly do deep research, want to choose from many models or work on big projects. Max is for the heaviest users. And whatever the plan, check the final price and the terms of any partner deal before you pay.
