What is Google AI Pro?

Google AI Pro is the mid-tier plan in the Google AI lineup, which took over from the old Gemini Advanced and Google One AI Premium plans. It combines three things:

  • broader access to Gemini, with more powerful models and higher limits;
  • Gemini built into Google apps: Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Vids and more;
  • Google One storage, shared across Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos.

You sign up through Google One or the Gemini app with your personal Google account. In the US, you need to be at least 13 to use a Google AI plan, and some features require you to be 18.

How much does Google AI Pro cost?

In the US, Google AI Pro costs $19.99 a month. That’s the official price I was able to verify; prices can change, so always double-check the amount on Google One’s official page when you sign up.

Here’s where Pro fits in the lineup:

What’s included in Google AI Pro

More powerful models and higher limits

With Pro, you get expanded access to Gemini 3.1 Pro, one of the Pro models included in the plan, and limits about 4 times higher than the standard level. In practice, you can run many more complex requests back to back without getting throttled.

A 1-million-token context window

This is a major difference from the free version, which is capped at 32,000 tokens. With 1 million tokens, Gemini can take in very long documents or several big files in the same conversation: an annual report, a lengthy contract, a book, a full case file.

Expanded Deep Research

Deep Research is available for free, but Pro gives you expanded access: more research runs, using the Pro model. Ideal if you regularly put together reports, studies or in-depth comparisons.

Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Sheets

This is one of Pro’s biggest perks: Gemini shows up right inside your Google apps, not just on gemini.google.com. You can ask it to summarize an email thread in Gmail, draft something in Docs or organize data in Sheets, without leaving the app.

Gemini Notebook

Gemini Notebook, the evolution of NotebookLM, lets you upload your documents and turn them into summaries, quizzes, mind maps or audio overviews based only on your sources. With Pro, you get higher limits.

Google Flow and video creation

Pro includes Google Flow, Google’s AI-powered video creation tool, with 1,000 Flow credits a month. You can generate videos with whichever Google video models are available on your plan. These models evolve fast: what matters is that Pro gives you more than Plus and less than Ultra.

5 TB of storage

Pro includes 5 TB of storage shared across Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos. That’s a lot: enough for hundreds of thousands of photos. If you’re already paying for a Google One storage plan, do the math: Pro can replace it and add AI on top.

Other Google tools

Pro also gives you expanded access to AI Studio and several other Google AI tools, mostly useful for technical and creative folks.

Family sharing

Google AI Pro can be shared with up to five other people in your Google family group, especially for storage and some perks. Some features stay reserved for the plan manager or come with their own conditions, so don’t expect every AI feature to be shared identically with each member.

For a family, that’s often a big selling point: one subscription covers everyone’s photo storage, plus some shared perks.

Google AI Plus: the cheaper alternative

If Pro feels too pricey, Google AI Plus ($9.99 a month) is the entry-level paid plan. It currently includes:

  • 2 TB of storage;
  • Gemini limits about 2 times higher than the standard level;
  • broader access to Gemini 3.1 Pro;
  • Deep Research;
  • Gemini in Gmail and other Google apps;
  • Gemini Notebook;
  • image, music and video generation with lower quotas than Pro;
  • 200 Flow credits a month.

For regular personal use without big storage or video needs, it’s often the best value.

Google AI Ultra: who is it for?

Google AI Ultra is the top tier. It’s not just “Pro with more storage”: the differences are mostly about quotas, advanced reasoning models and experimental tools. Depending on the tier, it includes:

  • 20 or 30 TB of storage;
  • Gemini limits up to 5x or 20x Pro’s;
  • access to Deep Think, the most advanced reasoning mode;
  • much higher Flow limits, up to 10,000 or 25,000 credits a month;
  • access to experimental tools like Project Genie, exclusive to Ultra;
  • individual YouTube Premium in eligible countries.

Ultra is aimed at video creators, researchers, developers and professionals who push AI to its limits. For the vast majority of users, it’s overkill.

The student offer

In the US, Google offers 12 months of Google AI Pro for free to eligible college students 18 and older. You’ll need to verify your student status, and the offer must be claimed by December 31, 2026. Check the terms on Google One’s official page before signing up.

Watch out for a common mix-up: the offers aren’t the same everywhere. The plan included in the student offer depends on the country, so if you see conflicting info online, that’s probably why.

Google AI Pro in everyday life: four profiles

To help you picture it, here are four situations where Pro really makes a difference.

The family running out of storage

Photos of the kids, vacation videos, backups from four phones: the free 15 GB filled up ages ago. With Pro, the 5 TB are shared across the family group, along with some AI perks depending on Google’s terms. For a family already paying for storage, the AI is almost a bonus.

The freelancer who lives in Gmail

Quotes, follow-ups, client emails: most of the day happens in Gmail and Google Docs. With Gemini built in, they can summarize long email threads, draft replies and polish proposals without switching tools. That can save time every week.

The student or researcher working with big documents

Thesis, dissertation, literature review: with a 1-million-token context window, Gemini can keep several long papers in mind at once. Gemini Notebook helps you study from your own sources. And Deep Research, with expanded quotas, helps you get a handle on a new topic. Good to know: an eligible US college student can get all of this with the free year of Google AI Pro.

The content creator

Social media posts, short videos, visuals: Flow and its 1,000 monthly credits let you try AI-generated video without jumping to Ultra. For heavy video production, though, Ultra is a better fit.

Before you subscribe: three checks

  1. Check your real usage: for one week, note how often you hit the free version’s limits. If it’s rare, Plus or the free plan is enough.
  2. Check your existing subscriptions: if you already pay for a Google One storage plan, compare the total cost with Pro.
  3. Check the current terms: price, any free trial, the student offer and exactly what the plan includes, right on Google One’s official page.

How to subscribe and cancel

You can subscribe through Google One or the Gemini app with your personal Google account. To manage or cancel it, go to your Google One subscription settings. If you subscribed through your phone’s app store, you’ll usually manage it from there. If you cancel, think about your storage: if you’re over the free plan’s space, you’ll need to free some up.

Is Google AI Pro worth it?

Here’s my decision checklist.

Pro is worth it if:

  • you often hit the free version’s limits;
  • you want Gemini right inside Gmail and Docs every day;
  • you work with very long documents (1-million-token window);
  • you’re short on Google storage or already pay for a storage plan;
  • you want to share one subscription with your family;
  • you create videos regularly.

Stick with free or Plus if:

  • you use Gemini a few times a week for simple questions;
  • you don’t use Gmail or Drive;
  • your storage needs are modest;
  • you’re an eligible US college student: grab the free year of Pro first, then decide.

If you’re torn between Google and OpenAI, my ChatGPT vs. Gemini comparison will help, and my article on ChatGPT Plus covers the competing subscription.

Google AI Pro or ChatGPT Plus?

This is the comparison I get asked about most, since both plans cost about the same ($19.99 vs. $20 a month). The difference really comes down to the ecosystem and the features you need.

Google AI Pro is deeply integrated with Gmail, Docs, Drive and Google services, and includes 5 TB of storage you can share with your family. ChatGPT Plus has its own set of tools and features, which I cover in my article on ChatGPT Plus.

My advice: try both free versions on your real tasks for a week first. Whichever one saves you the most time is the one that deserves your subscription.
