What is Gemini?
Gemini is both the name of Google’s AI assistant and the name of the family of AI models that power it. It replaced Bard in 2024 and is gradually replacing Google Assistant on many Android devices.
In practice, it’s a conversational assistant: you type or talk to it, and it answers. It can write, summarize, explain, translate, search the web, analyze files, create images and, depending on your plan, take action directly in your Google apps.
What sets it apart from other assistants is its tight connection to the Google ecosystem: Google Search, YouTube, Maps, Gmail, Drive, Docs, Calendar. If you already use these services every day, Gemini becomes a natural extension of your habits.
How to access Gemini
There are several ways in, all with the same Google account:
- On a computer: go to gemini.google.com and sign in with your Google account.
- On Android: install the Gemini app (it’s often already there); you can set it as your phone’s default assistant.
- On iPhone: download the Gemini app from the App Store.
- Inside Google services: depending on your plan, Gemini shows up as a side panel in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive or Slides.
- In the Chrome browser: Gemini may be available right inside Chrome, depending on your country and version.
All you need is a Google account: if you have a Gmail address, you already have everything you need to get started. In the US, you need to be at least 13 to use Gemini with a personal Google account, and some features are limited to users 18 and older.

What Gemini can do
Chat, write and explain
This is the basics: ask a question, request a piece of writing, have a concept explained. Gemini writes emails, messages, outlines and summaries, and adapts to whatever tone you ask for. The way to phrase your requests well is the same as with ChatGPT: I cover it in detail in my article on how to write a good prompt.
Explain the difference between a fixed-rate mortgage and an adjustable-rate mortgage in simple terms, with an example using real numbers, as if I knew nothing about it.
Search the internet
Gemini relies on Google Search to answer questions about current events, practical questions and local questions. It can show links to its sources, and you can use the double-check feature to verify certain claims with Google Search.
Analyze documents and images
You can upload a PDF, a document, a spreadsheet or a photo and ask questions about it. Gemini can also read files stored in your Google Drive, without you having to download them.
Here are my HOA's bylaws and rules. Summarize the rules about renovations inside individual units and the steps I need to take before remodeling my bathroom.
Create and edit images
Gemini generates images from a description and lets you edit an existing photo: swap the background, add an object, change the style. Its editing tools are especially good at keeping people and objects consistent from one image to the next.
Deep Research
For a complex question, Deep Research runs a real investigation: it draws up a plan, checks lots of sources and hands you a structured report. By default, Deep Research uses Google Search, but you can also add Gmail, Drive, uploaded files and even your Gemini notebooks as sources, depending on your account.
Talk with Gemini Live
Gemini Live lets you have a natural, real-time voice conversation on your phone. You can interrupt it, change the subject, and even share your camera or screen to show it what you’re looking at: a sick houseplant, a broken appliance, a menu in a foreign language.
Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Drive
This is where it really makes a difference. With eligible paid Google AI plans, Gemini is built right into your apps:
- Gmail: summarize a long email thread, suggest a reply, find information in your messages.
- Google Docs: write a first draft, rephrase a paragraph, suggest an outline.
- Google Sheets: organize data, suggest formulas, build a table.
- Google Drive: find a file and summarize what’s in it.
- Google Calendar: create an event or check when you’re free.
Even with the free version, Gemini can connect to several Google services through connected apps (formerly called “extensions”), including Gmail, Drive, Docs, Calendar, Tasks and Keep, depending on your account and the features available:
Search my emails for my hotel booking confirmation in Nashville and give me the address, the dates and the latest check-in time.
Available features vary by plan, country and account type (personal or work). Check Gemini’s settings to see which apps are turned on.

Gems: your custom assistants
Gems are customized versions of Gemini that you set up once for a specific task. You give them a name, instructions and, if needed, reference files. After that, you just open one and you’ve got an assistant that’s already briefed.
A few ideas for useful Gems:
- A proofreader that edits your writing while respecting your style.
- A fitness coach that knows your level and your equipment.
- A cooking assistant that keeps your family’s allergies in mind.
- A tutor that helps a child study without giving away the answers.
- A work assistant that knows your business and your tone.
You're my writing assistant for my handmade ceramics shop. Your tone is warm and simple, with no superlatives. You write product descriptions of 80 words max, including dimensions, care instructions and one sentence about how the piece is made. Ask me a question if any information is missing.
It’s the equivalent of what custom GPTs offered in ChatGPT (personal accounts can no longer create them as of September 2026), and it’s one of Gemini’s most underused features.
Free or paid Gemini?
The free version of Gemini is very complete for everyday use: chatting, writing, searching, file analysis, image creation, Gemini Live and Gems. It has usage limits, especially on the most advanced models, Deep Research and image generation.
The paid plans, grouped under the Google AI name, add more power and features:
| Plan | Price | Who it’s for |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Trying it out and light everyday use |
| Google AI Plus | $9.99 a month | Higher limits and 2 TB of storage |
| Google AI Pro | $19.99 a month | Regular use, Gmail and Docs integration, 5 TB of storage |
| Google AI Ultra | Much more expensive | Heavy use and the most advanced features |
One thing people often forget: these plans include Google storage space (for Gmail, Drive and Photos). If you already pay for a Google One storage plan, factor in the 5 TB included with Google AI Pro before comparing prices. And if you’re a US student 18 or older, you can get 12 months of Google AI Pro free (verification required, claim by December 31, 2026). Prices and features change, so check the official website before you subscribe.

My tips for using Gemini better
After several months of using it, here are the habits that really make a difference.
Pick the right model
Gemini usually offers a fast model for simple questions and a more thoughtful model for complex tasks. Use the first for a recipe or a rewrite, the second for a logic problem, an analysis or an important decision.
Ask for longer answers
Gemini sometimes tends to be brief. If an answer feels too short, just say so: “expand on each point with a concrete example” or “give me a detailed 500-word version.”
Use the double-check button
For an important factual answer, use the double-check feature with Google Search when it’s offered. Passages that sources confirm or contradict get flagged, which helps you spot mistakes.
Export to Docs or Gmail
Happy with an answer? You can often export it straight to Google Docs or turn it into a Gmail draft, no copy-pasting needed. It’s a real time-saver for meeting notes and letters.
Pick up a conversation where you left off
Your conversations are saved in your history (depending on your activity settings). For a long-running project, go back to the same conversation instead of starting a new one: Gemini will keep the context.
Privacy: what you need to know
Gemini can access very personal data, especially if you connect Gmail or Drive. A few habits to build:
- Review your Gemini activity in your Google account settings: you can choose how long it’s kept or turn off saving.
- Check your connected apps and turn off the ones you don’t need.
- If “Keep Activity” is turned on, some conversations may be reviewed by human reviewers and used to improve Google services. If you turn it off, your new conversations are no longer used to train the models (unless you send feedback), but they’re still kept for up to 72 hours to run and secure the service.
- On a work account, the rules are set by your organization and your data generally isn’t used the same way.
As with any assistant: no passwords, no banking details, no sensitive health information.
Gemini’s limitations
Gemini is powerful, but it’s not perfect:
- It can get things wrong, even with Google Search. Double-check important information.
- Features vary a lot by plan, country and account type, which can make the lineup hard to keep track of.
- It’s less useful if you don’t use Google: without Gmail or Drive, you lose its main advantage.
- Answers are sometimes shorter than other assistants’: don’t hesitate to ask for more detail.
